Have you ever wondered what the Texas Birding Classic, Birdathon and birding competitions are all about? This is your chance to have that experience. Join birding expert Greg Miller (of “The Big Year” fame) and his logistics team to engage in this fast-paced, fun competition to top birding sites on Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula.
Greg along with handpicked local birders will lead you to their best, secret Galveston County birding locations where participants will spot, listen, locate, describe, identify, verify, agree, record, and count as many feathered species as possible within a 10-hour period. Sites visited will be determined by Greg, depending on weather and migration. Your team will spend the day on a quest to for the largest species bird count. We anticipate that participants will see over 100 species of birds. A good time is the main objective for this field trip. This is a friendly competition, but as we search for birds, we will try to offer everyone on the trip an opportunity to look at as many species as possible. The faster pace may limit the amount of time spent at individual locations. We will definitely be on the move! The goal of the group will be to find more bird species than the previous high number for this trip, which was 135 in 2015. Since this tour will be fast, fun birding, with the priority of everyone seeing the most species possible, there will be no time for photography.
- Ideally, everyone in a group should get a look at all species. We all know that is not always possible, however, working together, we will try to make sure everyone has a great experience.
- At least one trip leader and two participants should see the bird for it to count.
