Grand Marquee Workshop:
Birding Forum

Price: $15

Date: Saturday, April 10

Time: 3:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Expert Presenters: Don Freiday, Kevin Karlson, Ted Eubanks, Jeff Bouton

What do the experts consider when they see a bird in the field? Come to this exciting ID forum and observe some of the top North American birders in action as they identify birds while sharing the thought process involved. Bird photos selected by birder/photographer Kevin Karlson will be shown both to the audience and expert panel in groups of four images of increasing difficulty for a particular bird family. Panel members will then try to identify the bird and explain what ID points led to their conclusion. The audience will have a minute or two to think about the birds before hearing the experts’ opinions. It will be interesting to hear personal ID criteria for each panel expert and see how they reach the same, or different, conclusions using various field ID marks and impressions.

This ID forum is the brain child of David Yee and the Central Valley Bird Symposium in California, and one of the highlights of their festival each year. It is not meant to test or put the panel members on the spot, but to give festival participants a chance to compare their own ID thought process to those of the “experts.” While everyone takes their ID skills seriously, this forum is light-hearted in its intent, with a fun time had by all. Occasional disagreements allow the audience to see how ID dilemmas are sometimes resolved by a forum. This is a very popular event, so be sure to sign up early. The last 15 minutes will be dedicated to questions and socializing with the experts.

Workshop:
Shorebirds and Birding by Impression

Price: $25

Date: Friday, April 9

Time: 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Expert Presenter: Kevin Karlson

This interactive indoor workshop will share a different approach to field identification that Kevin calls Birding by Impression. This exciting ID approach concentrates on basic impressions of size, shape and body motion to form a surprisingly accurate initial mental picture of every bird seen in the field. Other impression-based field characters include behavior, habitat use, vocalizations and comparison to nearby familiar birds. These non-changeable field characters may be combined with traditional ID approaches using details of feather patterns and plumage to reach a more comprehensive overall ID picture. The first half of the program concentrates on shorebirds and how to apply this approach in all field conditions. The second half shows how to apply the approach to all bird families, and uses a number of digitized, comparative photos from Kevin and Dale’s new book. These photos allow the viewer to see similar species in side-by-side comparison, which is rarely possible in field conditions. The end result is a surprising recognition of obvious and subtle structural and plumage differences between these similar species. Come and share in this innovative new approach to bird ID – and audience participation is encouraged!
