2009 FeatherFest Photo Contest

The Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council and the Galveston County Daily News are pleased again to sponsor the photo contest held prior to FeatherFest, the Island’s annual birding and nature festival.

Individuals are invited to submit photographs of birds taken on or around Galveston Island.

A new contest category for youth in grades Kindergarten through eight has been added through a partnership with The Grand Kids Festival, presented by The Grand 1894 Opera House.

First, second and third place winners from both contests will be published in the Daily News and on the this page of the FeatherFest Web site. Winning children’s photos will be published on http://thegrand.com/TheGrandKidsFest.asp.

Both Grand Prize winners will be recognized at the FeatherFest Keynote Dinner on April 3.

First Place: Cynthia Barker - Newly Hatched Cardinals taken in Friendswood

Adult Photo Contest Honorable Mention Winners

Stephen Mayeux - White-tailed Kite taken at the San Luis Pass.


Barbara Rabek - Sandhill Cranes taken in a field off 103rd Street.



Youth Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner

Alexander Sholmire, age 9 from Texas City. His photo is of a Mallard Hen and was taken in Pelican Harbor in Texas City.

First Place: Steve Schuenke - Forster's Tern taken near the Ocean Star Drilling Rig.

Second Place: Tim Timmis - Great Egret taken at the Rookery in High Island.

Third Place: Susan Hardy - American Oystercatcher taken on the west end of the island.

Adult Youth
First Place: Andrew McInnes - Great Egret Family taken at the High Island Rookery.

First Place: Michael Marinez, a Fourth Grader at Roosevelt Willson. This photo of a Boat-tailed Grackle is titled "Crow Talking."
Second Place: Tim Timmis - Willet Feeding at Sunrise taken on Bolivar Flats.

Second Place: Paris Norstrom, a First Grader at Hughes Elementary School in Dickinson. This photo of a Greater White-fronted Goose is titled "Pardon Me."
Third Place: Doug Morphew - Tango of two Black-necked Stilts taken near the San Luis Pass.

Third Place: Miranda Catchings, a Sixth Grader at Fritz Barnettt Intermediate. The photo is of two Yellow-crowned Night Herons and is titled "Nest Time."

First Place: Penelope Inks, a Home Schooled Kindergartener in Sea Isle. Her photo of Seagulls is called "House Sitting".
Second Place: Steve Schuenke - Ruby-throated Hummingbird taken in Clear Lake

Second Place: Paris Norstrom, a First Grader at Hughes Elementary School in Dickinson. This photo of a duck is called "Peace".
Third Place: Deborah Repasz - Red-shouldered Hawk taken near the Texas City Dike

Third Place: Hunter Green, a Sixth Grader at Austin Magnet School. This photo of a Great Blue Heron is called "The Painted Ocean".

First Place: Vadim Troshkin - A Perfect Flight: White Ibis on the East End of Galveston Island

Second Place: Levi Roady, a 6th grader who is being home schooled in Santa Fe. Photo is of a Robin and was taken in Santa Fe.
Third Place: John Augelli - Avocets in Flight: American Avocets at the East End Lagoon
Third Place: Morgan Casey, a 4th grader from Oppe Elementary. Photo is of Seagulls and Morgan calls it "Taking Flight".


FeatherFest 2009 Photo Contest Rules

  • Photos must be of birds from Galveston County and nearby areas.
  • Photos must be e-mailed to featherfest@hotmail.com by 5 p.m. Thursday to be included in photos being judged to appear the following Wednesday in the Daily News (see schedule below).
  • Photos must be submitted in a full size file at 300 dpi.
  • Only two entries per week may be submitted.
  • Entries must include photographer’s name, photo title, name of bird(s) in photo, date photo was taken and location where photo was taken.
  • The Grand prize winner will be published April 1.
