PARKING PLAN
FOR FEATHERFEST 2008

Like many other tourist towns, Galveston Island has a very busy downtown area and parking is usually a difficult problem. We have, therefore, taken steps to secure parking for FeatherFest participants.

The official parking garage for FeatherFest 2008 is the Frost Bank Parking Garage which is located in downtown Galveston on a city block which runs from 21st Street to 22nd Street, and from Market Street to Mechanic Street.

It is a multi-story parking garage with many parking spaces, and is conveniently located to the FeatherFest headquarters venue at Old Galveston Square, which is located at 22nd Street and the Strand, about two blocks and less than two minutes at a slow walk. Please refer to the map of downtown Galveston located on this website for further clarification.

There are two entrances you might need to use during the festival since which entries are open will depend on the time you arrive and whether the manned entry is open.

The manned entry is entered from 21st street, between Market and Mechanic.

Prior to 9am it is possible that this gate will not be manned and hence not open, this is most likely to be the case for those going out on early field trips. But try it first.

An unmanned, automatic gate is located on Mechanic Street between 21st and 22nd street. If you need to use it, it takes quarters, dollar bills and OLD only $5 bills.

The fee Thursday and Friday is $1.50 per hour, or $3.75 to park all day.

The fee Saturday and Sunday is $3 all day.

ON WEEK DAYS THERE WILL BE NO ATTENDANT ON DUTY AFTER 6.30PM. IF YOU HAVE NOT EXITED BY THEN ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY YOUR CAR WILL BE THERE ALL NIGHT ! YOU CAN PARK ANYWHERE ON GALVESTON STREETS AFTER 6PM, SO IF YOU PLAN TO STAY FOR SOCIALS ETC, ON THOSE TWO NIGHTS, PLAN TO REPARK YOUR CAR.

ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY YOU CAN EXIT AT ANYTIME BY THE MECHANIC STREET EXIT.

For those persons going on the very early Prairie Chicken trips, leaving at 5am Sunday, .you have another parking option. Drive to the Old Galveston Square building and park in the AMPCO parking lot just next to Chicos at Strand and 22 nd St. Put $5 in the box for your parking number. Do not park in the three spaces by the Disabled spaces against the OGS wall, they are for short term parking for festival workers, suppliers etc.

The three parking spaces with signs on this same AMPCO parking area (next to Chicos at Strand and 22 St.etc) may as mentioned above, only be used for 30 minutes max..

The spaces marked “Disabled” should not be used unless the driver had the right to use it. These spaces have easy access to a handicap ramp and side entrance.

For buses and vans and for persons loading and unloading heavy equipment, there will be a drop-off zone, curbside, on The Strand directly in front of Old Galveston Square.

For those visitors who will be visiting the downtown area by Recreational vehicle it will not be feasible to park in the Frost bank parking garage.

On Thursday and Friday, during the day prior to 5pm, the only place to park an RV, close to the FF venue is in parking lot #4 at Pier 21 (at the harbor side, two short blocks from Old Galveston Square.

Only two or three can be accomodated. The charge is $10.00 per day.

On Saturday and Sunday, they could park in the surface lots around the American National Insurance building, which is just south of the Frost Bank parking garage.

The same $10.00 charge would apply, but space is unlimited.

On Saturday April 5, Post Office Avenue between 20th and 21st streets will be blocked for the Grand Opera House Grandparents Fair. So you will not be able to cross Post Office to get to the parking garage entrance on 21st . You will need to cross Post Office on 22 nd and jog over a block to get to 21st street and the parking garage entrance.

Please watch this space for updates on this subject.
