Steve Gast

steve-gastSteve started birding at age 13, and by age 18 was leading his own section of the local Christmas Bird Count near St Louis, Missouri. He is a retired geologist who spent much of his career working and birding around the world and has birded in over 35 countries. He first moved to Houston in 1985 and by 1988 was leading birding trips to the Katy Prairie and other areas for Piney Woods Wildlife Society, the Outdoor Nature Club, and Houston Audubon. He has served on Houston Audubon and Gulf Coast Bird Observatory Boards of Directors and continues in advisory capacities to both boards. Currently Steve serves on Texas Audubon’s Board as chairman of the Science and Conservation Committee and the Katy Prairie Conservancy’s Board of Directors as chair of the Land Stewardship Committee.

We are very excited to be able to offer this pre-festival trip to our FeatherFest registrants once again! Only an hour or so west of Houston, the Katy Prairie contains a wide array of habitats critical to migratory and resident birds including coastal prairie uplands, agricultural grassland, prairie and agricultural wetlands, bottomland hardwoods and wetlands, and freshwater impoundments.
